Fun fact: the word “eureka” comes from Greek “huereka,” which means “I have found it!” (Apparently, the inventor Archimedes shouted it when making one of his discoveries.) Well, our Eureka! scholars have been full of “I found it!” moments too. And not just at our exciting summer STEM program at UMass—but throughout the school year, when the girls learn even more, one Saturday a month.
Here’s a peek at some upcoming Saturdays: There’s a biochemistry workshop in September, a January geosciences seminar with UMass seismologist Haiying Gao, and a February meet-up with the Western New England University chapter of the Society of Women Engineers. During the fall, our Eureka! scholars will also add service to science: In October, they’ll do the Rays of Hope walk to support breast cancer research.
All this school-year learning builds on a super summer. Over four weeks in July, the girls tagged birds at Holyoke Heritage State Park with UMass environmental science professor Susannah Lerman. They did a tasting tour of the university’s permaculture garden (love those July strawberries!). And there were also many enlightening field trips, such as to Bay State Children’s Hospital. There are just too many discoveries to weigh: Archimedes would be proud.
